Calling all car drivers! Drive hunger away on World Food Day 2020

FBSG targets 100 tonnes of food donations for beneficiaries in Singapore

August 27, 2020 – The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today issues a rallying call to all car drivers to help steer towards a hunger-free Singapore on World Food Day 2020.

From October 16 to 18, FBSG is targeting to receive 100 tonnes of food donations for 360 beneficiary organisations that feed more than 250,000 individuals across Singapore.

Based on the theme “Drive Hunger Away”, this year’s World Food Day activities involve engaging car drivers and car clubs to come together in solidarity in donating, collecting and delivering food items to FBSG’s new premise at XPACE, 218 Pandan Loop.

Championed by the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization, World Food Day promotes global awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets for all.

Raising awareness of hunger issues, driving healthier donations
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a surge in the number of households coming forward to request for meal rations in 2020.

“With many unable to work and some losing their jobs during this season, the  observance of World Food Day is of extra significance this year as we raise  awareness on prevalent hunger issues in Singapore and ensure that vulnerable  individuals and families do not go hungry,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG. 

Apart from the usual non-perishable food items such as rice, oil and preserved food with at least a month of shelf-life, FBSG is seeking donations of healthier food items  such as canned protein, whole wheat products and bread spreads.  

Members of the public can make their donations at collection points in malls and  Shell petrol kiosks across the island, where cars will collect from and deliver the  food items to FBSG.  

“Singapore is famous for great food and expensive cars. We thought it would be  great to marry the two concepts into one fabulous campaign. ‘Drive Hunger Away’ was truly conjured on the basis that everyone can still take part in our food drive, all  from the safety and comfort of their own cars. By using cars, the whole family can  also participate together to drop the items off. Cars, community and continuity in  feeding. The feeding must continue,” said Ng. 

Breakfast Drive by Assure Group Insurance, Eagles Car Club, Jeep Owners Club  Singapore, Outlander Passion Club (Mitsubishi), and Tridente Automobili (Maserati) are among the car clubs that have come on board to support this initiative.

#BOSSTOGETHERSG is a series of gastronomical collaborations with different local Food & Beverage (F&B) partners in support of the local businesses and the community during this period.

Each partnership will feature a BOSS Exclusive menu that will be available for order through the F&B partner’s platform for a limited period of time. 10% of the proceeds from this menu will be donated to The Food Bank Singapore, co-funded between BOSS and the F&B partner.
The third collaboration sees a partnership between BOSS with Chef Willin Low, who has been named by the New York Times as one of three chefs in Singapore who were “reinventing the city’s traditional food culture” and also chosen by the Financial Times as one of Singapore’s best chefs.

This partnership will see an exclusive popup of Wild Rocket at Roketto Izakaya from 1 – 31 August in conjunction with Singapore ́s National Day. The 8-Course menu consists of familiar traditional favorites like Laksa, Satay and Soon Kueh with a modern twist.

As a celebration of the initiative, customers will receive a $50 BOSS Voucher with every order of this menu during this period. The menu is $150++ per person.

UBS and UBS Optimus Foundation donate $650,000 to help expedite deployment of vending machines to care for foreign workers and low-income families

July 15, 2020 – The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today announces the establishment of The Food Pantry 2.0 in a dormitory for migrant workers in Punggol.

Housing about 60 migrant workers, the dormitory has three vending machines stocked with food items such as instant meals and hot beverages, as well as daily necessities such as soap, toothpaste and washing powder.

The Food Pantry 2.0 was launched last October 16 in conjunction with World Food Day, with the first location at Creamier’s Toa Payoh outlet.

Improving well-being and lives of migrant workers
“Since the launch of our first The Food Pantry 2.0, we have been looking to scale up the programme. The COVID-19 pandemic has glaringly highlighted the importance of having access to aid 24×7. Through the Community Foundation of Singapore, we were connected to UBS. Upon discussions with UBS, we felt that the machines would help improve the well-being and lives of migrant workers staying in dormitories,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

UBS and UBS Optimus Foundation have donated $650,000 to help expedite the roll out of The Food Pantry 2.0 in dormitories and low-income neighbourhoods across Singapore.

“COVID-19 outbreak has caused great inconveniences to various groups of people in the society, one such group includes migrant workers who have helped build and contribute to Singapore. UBS Community Affairs identified that this was a vulnerable group of people in society that required help and we reached out to them by supporting FBSG. FBSG had previously performed a needs evaluation and is providing no-contact vending machines which will dispense free necessities and groceries for our migrant workers to alleviate some of the burden that they face. As the situation progresses, we are hoping to resume physical volunteering activities and increase our impact on the community,” said August Hatecke, Country Head, UBS Singapore.

The vending machine concept of The Food Pantry 2.0 allows FBSG to provide food and other daily essentials that are redeemable round-the-clock. Migrant workers staying in the dormitory will be given a $50 Food Bank Card with which they can use to redeem items at just $2 each.

Caring should not end when COVID-19 ends FBSG intends to set up automated pantries in more dormitories once the migrant workers are more settled in their improved accommodation. It plans to procure up to 25 vending machines with support from equipment partner KALMS.

Machines deployed in dormitories will be assessed periodically and if they are no longer needed, will be redeployed elsewhere, such as in another dormitory or in a neighbourhood with low-income families in Singapore.

“We have received a lot of interest in The Food Pantry 2.0 as FBSG strides toward digitalisation. This is in line with the streamlining of efforts to increase our direct distribution network to support the NGOs that we work with. The caring should not end when COVID-19 ends,” said Ng.

With Covid-19 exacerbating food insecurity, virtual food banking app aims to enhance support for individuals and families affected by the crisis

4 June 2020 – DBS Bank today announced a partnership with The Food Bank Singapore to enhance Singapore’s food donation ecosystem, and better address food gaps for the vulnerable by connecting corporate donors to food support organisations via the nation’s first virtual food banking app. This is timely as Covid-19 is expected to have a prolonged impact on the economy, which would inadvertently weigh on the income of many individuals and families, exacerbating food insecurity.

According to Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Food Security Index, Singapore is the most food secure country in 2018 and 2019. However, the 2019 UN report on the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World found that 4.1% of the population in Singapore still faced moderate to severe food insecurity. This shows that addressing food insecurity is a continuous work in progress, particularly for the more vulnerable in society, and highlights a need for enhancements to Singapore’s current food support system to ensure food needs are better matched with the dietary needs of beneficiaries.

Currently, most of the food insecure such as the elderly and low-income families facing prolonged unemployment or health issues, receive support from the more than 100 food-support organisations locally. But a sizeable amount of the food tends to be allocated to beneficiaries residing in rental flats, which often results in food being left till past its shelf life and thrown away. On the other hand, some households which have large families and genuinely need help in putting the next meal on the table but stay in larger flats, or have higher per household income, tend to fall through the cracks and lack sufficient food support. These are issues the virtual food banking app aims to solve.

With the virtual food banking app, greater coordination and targeting of food support will be made possible, as food support organisations can submit requests to donors in real-time and on-the-go. For instance, donors can share the type and quantity of food they have on hand via the app, enabling food support organisations to have real-time visibility of the items available. This also helps facilitate more relevant food matching and support, ensuring beneficiaries receive the right quantum and types of food they need, minimising food waste, which is one of the largest waste streams in Singapore.

Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee said, “Since late 2019, we have brought together government agencies, food charities and volunteers passionate about the food charity landscape, as part of a ‘food workgroup’ to forge partnerships, co-create solutions to reduce food wastage and address food insecurity issues faced by low-income and vulnerable families. I am heartened by this innovative collaboration championed by DBS Bank and Food Bank. This is a timely initiative, which could enhance the way we organise food aid and coordinate donations as we tide through Covid-19 together.” 

Said DBS Singapore CEO Shee Tse Koon, “With many families facing a big dent to their income with the Covid-19 situation, we hope that this initiative will provide the impetus for the various participants in Singapore’s food donation ecosystem to come together as a united whole. With the virtual food banking app, we will have greater visibility of the support gaps in Singapore, and we hope more donors will be encouraged to come forth and make the commitment with us to help put food on the table for those in
need.”

Expected to be launched in 4Q2020, the virtual food banking app aims to streamline the food donation process by connecting donors, social service agencies, food support organisations, and logistics providers via a single platform. This removes the need for extra handling, reduces spoilage and ensures that fresh food reaches those in need more quickly. The virtual food banking app also aims to collect data for analysis to enable agencies to better understand needs on the ground. Going digital will also reduce some of the laborious and cumbersome paperwork involved.

“The Food Bank Singapore has been brainstorming possible solutions for the past three years as we realise that there are gaps in feeding programmes across agencies. Without big data, it is tougher to address these gaps. It is crucial for The Food Bank Singapore to digitalise to increase our efficiency. Since we only have a lean team of seven full-time staff, the virtual food bank will gradually reduce our reliance on the need for data entry. The app will be a great starting point to test a circular ecosystem where donors, beneficiary organisations and logistics providers can be looped onto one platform to better facilitate food aid. Covid-19 has allowed us to create a catalyst for change as the needs on the ground will not be the same as before,” said The Food Bank Singapore co-founder Nichol Ng.

DBS and The Food Bank Singapore are also working with TreeDots2, a social enterprise supported by the DBS Foundation, to leverage its network of food producers, importers, distributors, and F&B businesses to enhance the supply and predictability of food donations, and to amplify the impact of the virtual food banking platform. This is in addition to the bank’s ongoing efforts to engage its network of corporate clients to come onboard the platform as pilot donors. 

DBS is the founding partner for the virtual food banking platform and will be financing its development.

Committed to creating a positive social impact

In April, DBS launched its SGD 10.5 million DBS Stronger Together Fund to help communities hard hit by Covid-19 across the region. Through the fund, the bank will provide about 4.5 million meals and care packs to affected individuals across its six key markets, namely Singapore, Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia and Taiwan.

As part of the initiative, in Singapore, DBS is partnering The Food Bank Singapore and Itsrainingraincoats to distribute up to 700,000 meals to underserved segments, including the elderly, low-income and migrant workers, with the support of employees and fellow Singaporeans. These meals in turn will be procured from the bank’s SME clients from 23 F&B outlets, including Koufu Group, Chang Cheng Group, Wee Nam Kee and Gao Ji, providing much-needed support to the hard-hit sector amid these challenging times.

DBS Foundation has also been active in providing financial and non-financial support to social enterprises, helping them to tide through this trying period. In this year’s DBS Foundation Social Enterprise Grant Programme, the bank introduced a new Zero Food Waste category, aimed at supporting social enterprises with innovative solutions which reduce food waste. With this programme, DBS is able to support businesses that do good for both the environment and society.

Sing for Singapore (@SingForSG) is a Virtual Charity Talent Competition.

SingForSG invites everyone living in Singapore and Singaporeans based overseas to use their singing voices and talent to spread love and positivity and raise money for charity.

SingForSG aims to be a digital event that will bring Singaporeans together, lift our spirits during this challenging time and help vulnerable groups in our community that have been impacted by Covid-19. The Food Bank Singapore is the beneficiary of SingForSG. The organisers hope to garner a donation of $50,000 to help The Food Bank Singapore.

Why The Food Bank Singapore needs us 

Established in 2012 as Singapore’s first food bank, The Food Bank Singapore  (FBSG) works with more than 360 charities to meet the food needs of 300,000 underprivileged people. 

With the COVID-19 situation, not only have donations in kind dropped by 70 percent,  social distancing measures have also put a damper on the number of volunteers required to do the work on the ground. 

Over the last two weeks, FBSG has also seen a spike in the number of direct  requests coming from households. They have stepped up to bridge gaps that have  surfaced in the current aid system. Increased demand coupled with reduced  donations make it difficult to fulfil the growing number of requests.

FBSG is providing meals to essential workers, underprivileged families, elderly, and  migrant workers who are affected by COVID-19. The number of meals required daily  has risen to 10,000, resulting in an exponential increase in operational costs.  

The virtual charity talent competition, SingforSG, hopes to garner $50,000 in  donations, which will assist FBSG in their operational costs and enable them to keep  up with the increasing need for daily meals. 

“Food is beyond just providing nourishment for the body. The act of eating is also  over and above a very social activity that is now suppressed since we are not able to  see our friends and even our family. Therefore, we are very happy when SingforSG  approached us to be their beneficiary and everyone could do with some fun and  positivity now. We are grateful for the support to nourish the souls of all those in  need as well,” shares Nichol Ng, Co-Founder of The Food Bank Singapore. 

It’s time to Sing for Singapore…from your home.  

SingforSG is created and produced by local events agency The Events Artery. “We  asked ourselves how we can use our expertise to contribute during this time? So  then came the idea to create a digital event that we could all be a part of without  having to leave our homes,” shares Wai Mayleng, Founder & Managing Director of  The Events Artery. 

“We want to encourage people to express their emotions and creativity through  music and bring some joy to everyone during Singapore’s circuit breaker. The  competition is open to everyone who lives here and considers Singapore a home, and Singaporeans based overseas who would like to sing a song for their friends  and families here. We hope that the public will donate generously so that The Food  Bank Singapore can go on to continue the good work that they do.” 

Local musicians and entertainers lean in to support the cause 

The virtual charity competition will be streamed online over 6 episodes from 16 to 27  May 2020, 7.30pm. Viewers can expect to meet a total of 12 celebrity judges over  the series – Aisyah Aziz, Tosh Zhang, Sara Wee, Don Richmond, Mark Bonafide,  Haneri Milliona, Clement Chow, Dee Kosh, Fakkah Fuzz, Jack & Rai. 

How to take part in SingforSG 

To take part, simply post a video of your home performance with your choice of song  (in English). Entries can be solo, duet or whole family act – so long as they are living  together with you. 

Public to send in entries on Facebook from 27 April to 10 May 2020. Entries will be  judged based on singing, performance, entertainment value and audience votes. 

Top 20 entries will be selected to perform on the live stream shows. Live Shows streamed on Facebook from 16 May to 27 May 2020. 

$2000 worth of prizes to be won.

Calls for more donors and F&B partners to join Feed the City (Take-Away Edition) programme

April 3, 2020 – The double whammy of a lack of volunteer involvement coupled with a drop in donations due to the novel coronavirus pandemic have impacted charities in their ability to provide food and meals to those in need. Against this backdrop, The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today launched Feed the City (Take-Away Edition) to deliver 50,000 meals to needy families.

As a community effort, the programme involves donors that pay for the meals, food and beverage (F&B) partners to provide cooked meals at special rates, and volunteers to distribute the meals to various households island-wide.

“FBSG is committed to take on the crucial role during such uncertain times to continuously provide food to vulnerable communities and remain fully operational to ensure no one gets left behind. We are issuing a rallying call to sponsors and F&B outlets to come on board Feed the City (Take-Away Edition),” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

Through this programme, FBSG is building a tripartite model involving donors, F&B outlets and charities in dealing with the social and economic impact caused by COVID-19. It hopes to give F&B retailers that are badly hit a fighting chance of surviving this, while giving the underprivileged an opportunity to enjoy meals that are otherwise inaccessible to them.

“Many of the underprivileged are the ones who are likely on hourly wages and may be also the first to be let go when circumstances take a turn for the worse. We also want to do a shout out to charities that have the funds to cook meals but are lacking in volunteers at this point to look at supporting their local F&B establishments instead. By supporting F&B retailers, we hope to join the COVID-19 fight on all fronts,” said Ng.

Geneco and Grain Singapore joins the fight

First to come on board as a donor is Geneco, brand of YTL PowerSeraya (Singapore’s second largest power generation company), with a pledge of 1,000 meals. The leading electricity retailer this week launched a social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram to encourage individuals to share the post and tag a friend. For every share and tag, Geneco will donate a meal. FBSG is also a partner of Geneco’s ChangeMakersSG initiative, which brings together like-minded organisations who share Geneco’s vision to build a sustainable future.

“Geneco strongly believes in powering the change for the community and we are glad to be able to support FBSG. The small simple act of an individual can make a big difference and go a long way to help the less unfortunate, which in essence is why we started our ChangeMakersSG. Hence, we would like to rally Singaporeans to stay united as one and hope everyone can contribute by donating to FBSG,” said Alex Chan, Head of Marketing at Geneco.

Online caterer Grain, the first F&B partner under the programme, has pledged to
provide nutritious meals at a special rate.

“While this is an intensely stressful time with a lot of uncertainty, there are also a lot of opportunities for us to support and be kind to one another. At Grain, apart from adapting our business to prioritise the well-being of our customers and our team, we realise there is a role we can play in supporting our food rescue partners and healthcare heroes in these challenging times. Now more than ever, we can all appreciate just how connected we are, and the importance of coming together to protect our community in times of great need. With support from the Singapore government, as well as timely initiatives such as Feed the City, we are confident that we will get through these difficult times together,” said Shawn Liam, Director of Grain.

Meals for senior citizens and needy families
The meals will be distributed by FBSG’s volunteers to senior citizens from FBSG’s beneficiary centres that are facing challenges providing food and meals to their clients.

The initial target group are from Senior Activity Centres that are currently closed for activities, leaving seniors to stay home with limited interaction. Another group are families affected by job losses and no-pay leave from this pandemic.

“Feed the City (Take-Away Edition) is expected to last for two months or until the COVID-19 situation improves and the DORSCON level goes back to Green. With this in mind, we are looking for more donors and partners to join us in this community effort to feed the hungry. We welcome different types of F&B players — from cooked meals to confectionaries – to partner with us. Our message to everyone in Singapore is ‘Support your local eatery today’,” said Ng.

320 cars join drive to raise 100 tonnes of food donations to feed the
hungry

October 5, 2020 – The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) has received a roaring response from the car community to its Drive Hunger Away event to commemorate World Food Day 2020.

Eighteen car clubs and a total of 320 cars have heeded the call to donate, collect and deliver food items for the hungry in Singapore from October 16 to 18.

The car clubs taking part in this event are:

  4. Chrysler Jeep Automotive of Singapore PL (Jeep Owner’s Club Singapore) 5. Eagles Car Club 
  5. Elantra Avante Club Singapore 
  6. Honda Crossroad Club Singapore 
  7. Jetta Club Singapore
  8. Land Rover Owner’s Club 
  9. Mercedes C118 Group 
  10. Nissan GTR 
  11. Outlander Passion Club 
  12. SG Alliance 
  13. SG Convertible Club 
  14. SG Trident 
  15. The Serpent’s Pit (Alfa Romeo) 
  16. Tridente Automobili Pte Ltd (Maserati) 
  17. Tucson Owners Club 

Representative of car clubs will line up for a flag off at FBSG’s premises at XPACE, 218 Pandan Loop, on October 16 to kick off the three-day event.

FBSG’s goal is to receive 100 tonnes of food donations for 360 beneficiary organisations that feed more than 300,000 individuals across Singapore.

Food is basic right for everyone 

Championed by the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization, World Food Day promotes global awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets for all.

“World Food Day is a stark reminder that food is a basic right and necessity for everyone. With safe distancing in mind, Drive Hunger Away reinforces the need for us to continue feeding despite the circumstance that the world is in. The pandemic has forced us to be more creative to keep our mission of eradicating food insecurity alive. We would like to thank all the car clubs that have pledged their support. We would also like to do a shout out to everyone, motorists or not, to join our fight to end hunger in Singapore. Let the feeding continue,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

Calling drivers and members of the public

Members of the public can participate in this worthwhile cause by sending food and monetary donations to FBSG’s premises. As part of safe management measures, the process will be contactless with a drive-through concept. Donors can redeem a cup of coffee and a light snack (fruit or pastry) with contribution of at least $10 or 10kg of food.

They can also drop their donations at collection points in malls and Shell petrol kiosks across the island, where cars will collect from and deliver the food items to FBSG.

Apart from the usual non-perishable food items such as rice, oil and preserved food with at least a month of shelf-life, FBSG is seeking donations of healthier food items such as canned protein, whole wheat products and bread spreads.
