Changing the way we feed Singapore, we are empowering beneficiaries and restoring dignity through the power of autonomy.

The distribution of food to beneficiaries has traditionally been done through a “one size fits all approach” by predefining food bundles consisting of regular staple and non-perishable items. However, based on the findings from The Hunger Report Part II and conversations with our feeding partners, we have found that such an approach can lead to food wastage as food staples distributed to beneficiaries may not always be suitable for their dietary needs.

Developed to address the needs and to redefine the way beneficiaries receive food aid in Singapore, this initiative empowers beneficiaries with the ability to select and manage when and what they eat.

How it works

Under the Feed The City Tap A Meal initiative, FBSG partners with F&B establishments to provide meals to beneficiaries of our Feeding Partners using FBSG’s Bank Cards. Beneficiaries only need to tap the Bank Card Readers to make the redemption.

“We learnt that people prefer cooked food, want to choose their own food, and want to eat at their own time. With the lack of feeding programmes that meet such needs, we decided to change the way we feed Singapore.” Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

FBSG’s Bank Card Programme is a smart wallet pre-loaded with credits every month in which beneficiaries can redeem meals of their choice from participating F&B outlets and FBSG’s Food Pantry at any time.

Feed The City Tap A Meal is the 3rd run of the Feed The City initiative that first launched in 2019.

FBSG’s latest initiative also aims to create new revenue stream for  hawkers and other F&B outlets

September 17, 2021The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today launches the Feed the City 3.0 initiative to feed people in need in Singapore by letting them buy food from their preferred hawker and food and beverage (F&B) outlets and eat at their preferred time.

This reinvention is in response to FBSG’s findings on distribution of fixed types of food at fixed times. It is about giving choices as feeding the hungry should not be about having a one-size-fits-all approach.

“FBSG has been continuously keeping our ears on the ground to better understand  the needs of the hungry. We learnt that people prefer cooked food, want to choose  their own food, and want to eat at their own time. With the lack of feeding  programmes that meet such needs, we decided to change the way we feed  Singapore,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG. “The move will free volunteers from cooking and delivering door to door to focus on being ambassadors of the food  banking movement and getting more F&B partners and donors to come on board.”

The initiative is an extension of the organisation’s Bank Card programme, which lets  the needy purchase dry food items from its vending machines under its The Food  Pantry 2.0 programme. FBSG is expanding the programme to all its beneficiary organisations and reaching  out to community development councils (CDCs) to ensure that the ground is covered  and those in need are fed.

First on board as a F&B partner is Fei Siong Group, which operates food stalls in  coffee shops, food kiosks, quick serve restaurants and food atriums across 19  brands including Nam Kee Pau and Boleh Boleh.

“We are heartened to be able to support the beneficiaries via this initiative. With our  extensive range of food selection across both halal and non-halal brands from more  than 150 outlets island-wide, we hope that beneficiaries can redeem and enjoy a  meal of their choice in a location easily accessible to them,” said Tan Kim Siong,  Founder and Managing Director of Fei Siong Group. The group will progressively roll  out this initiative across its brands, starting with Encik Tan in September.

Feeding the hungry, helping food vendors

Under the scheme, a beneficiary orders a meal from a participating F&B outlet and  pays with the Bank Card. The vendor will scan the Bank Card using the app on the smartphone. The amount will be deducted from the card and the data will be sent to  FBSG to reimburse the vendor.

“The meals will be charged at regular and not subsidised price as we understand  that hawkers and F&B outlets are also going through a challenging time. Feed the  City 3.0 aims to provide them with an additional revenue stream, helping them to  save their livelihood. Some outlets are giving us a little discount to help defray the  operational cost. We hope at least 20 other F&B groups and food chains, as well as hawkers will sign up for the programme by the year end. We are also appealing for  more to donate cash and join us in feeding the hungry,” said Ng.

Feed the City was first organised in 2019 where 1,000 people in need from FBSG’s beneficiary members were treated to a meal at City Square Mall. When COVID-19  struck last year, the event was called Feed the City (Take-Away Edition), which  involved delivering about one million meals to needy families.

Calls for more donors and F&B partners to join Feed the City (Take-Away Edition) programme

April 3, 2020 – The double whammy of a lack of volunteer involvement coupled with a drop in donations due to the novel coronavirus pandemic have impacted charities in their ability to provide food and meals to those in need. Against this backdrop, The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today launched Feed the City (Take-Away Edition) to deliver 50,000 meals to needy families.

As a community effort, the programme involves donors that pay for the meals, food and beverage (F&B) partners to provide cooked meals at special rates, and volunteers to distribute the meals to various households island-wide.

“FBSG is committed to take on the crucial role during such uncertain times to continuously provide food to vulnerable communities and remain fully operational to ensure no one gets left behind. We are issuing a rallying call to sponsors and F&B outlets to come on board Feed the City (Take-Away Edition),” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

Through this programme, FBSG is building a tripartite model involving donors, F&B outlets and charities in dealing with the social and economic impact caused by COVID-19. It hopes to give F&B retailers that are badly hit a fighting chance of surviving this, while giving the underprivileged an opportunity to enjoy meals that are otherwise inaccessible to them.

“Many of the underprivileged are the ones who are likely on hourly wages and may be also the first to be let go when circumstances take a turn for the worse. We also want to do a shout out to charities that have the funds to cook meals but are lacking in volunteers at this point to look at supporting their local F&B establishments instead. By supporting F&B retailers, we hope to join the COVID-19 fight on all fronts,” said Ng.

Geneco and Grain Singapore joins the fight

First to come on board as a donor is Geneco, brand of YTL PowerSeraya (Singapore’s second largest power generation company), with a pledge of 1,000 meals. The leading electricity retailer this week launched a social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram to encourage individuals to share the post and tag a friend. For every share and tag, Geneco will donate a meal. FBSG is also a partner of Geneco’s ChangeMakersSG initiative, which brings together like-minded organisations who share Geneco’s vision to build a sustainable future.

“Geneco strongly believes in powering the change for the community and we are glad to be able to support FBSG. The small simple act of an individual can make a big difference and go a long way to help the less unfortunate, which in essence is why we started our ChangeMakersSG. Hence, we would like to rally Singaporeans to stay united as one and hope everyone can contribute by donating to FBSG,” said Alex Chan, Head of Marketing at Geneco.

Online caterer Grain, the first F&B partner under the programme, has pledged to
provide nutritious meals at a special rate.

“While this is an intensely stressful time with a lot of uncertainty, there are also a lot of opportunities for us to support and be kind to one another. At Grain, apart from adapting our business to prioritise the well-being of our customers and our team, we realise there is a role we can play in supporting our food rescue partners and healthcare heroes in these challenging times. Now more than ever, we can all appreciate just how connected we are, and the importance of coming together to protect our community in times of great need. With support from the Singapore government, as well as timely initiatives such as Feed the City, we are confident that we will get through these difficult times together,” said Shawn Liam, Director of Grain.

Meals for senior citizens and needy families
The meals will be distributed by FBSG’s volunteers to senior citizens from FBSG’s beneficiary centres that are facing challenges providing food and meals to their clients.

The initial target group are from Senior Activity Centres that are currently closed for activities, leaving seniors to stay home with limited interaction. Another group are families affected by job losses and no-pay leave from this pandemic.

“Feed the City (Take-Away Edition) is expected to last for two months or until the COVID-19 situation improves and the DORSCON level goes back to Green. With this in mind, we are looking for more donors and partners to join us in this community effort to feed the hungry. We welcome different types of F&B players — from cooked meals to confectionaries – to partner with us. Our message to everyone in Singapore is ‘Support your local eatery today’,” said Ng.
