At the mammoth Food & Hotel Asia (FHA) exhibition on the 8th to 11th April 2014, Food Bank Singapore collected eight truckloads of excess food worth nearly $100,000. This is the first time that the food bank has salvaged excess food at a food exhibition and it is looking forward to doing so at other such shows.

Even though there were a lot of meats and seafood on display, the food bank understood the sensitivity of handling these products as there were challenges to handle, transport and distribute them in good time. Because of this, the food bank collected mainly non-perishable items such as packaged goods like biscuits, crackers, tidbits, juices, frozen confectionery like donuts, muffins, cakes, breads and even some cheeses that are seldom seen in the market!

There was a huge variety of brands and products collected and volunteers would sort the collected foods to check expiry dates and the condition of the products.

The excess foods were collected and distributed daily to those who could collect them. Some beneficiaries had arranged for their volunteers to help out and come down on Friday to pick out and collect the items that they wanted. The balance that could not be given out was taken back to the Food Bank Singapore’s warehouse to be shared with the other beneficiaries.

“Not only did we reduce food wastage but these premium foods have benefitted many of our member beneficiaries. FHA has given us exposure to 10 halls of potential donors and raised awareness of our organisation. We are grateful and happy to be able to work with Singapore Exhibition Services on FHA 2014,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of Food Bank Singapore”.

The Food & Hotel Asia 2014 has been a great opportunity for the food bank to share what we do and spread the news on reducing food wastage and channelling them to better use.

The Food Bank Singapore would like to thank the many volunteers and beneficiaries that chipped in to help us with our inaugural exhibition! Thank you!

October 29, 2021 – Over two weekends, The Food Bank Singapore  (FBSG) welcomed 450 cars from 20 car clubs who donated 26 tonnes of food for its Drive Hunger Away event that was held in conjunction with World Food Day 2021 on  October 16. “We are so thankful for the immense support from the participating drivers in  joining our fight to eradicate food insecurity in Singapore. Their efforts have not  gone unnoticed as more car clubs have told us that they want to be involved too so  we’re thinking of organising monthly food drives for different clubs,” said Nichol Ng,  Co-founder of FBSG.

Food drive to flag off on World Food Day on October 16

October 11, 2021 – The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today calls all car drivers to join its fight against food insecurity at the Drive Hunger Away event over two weekends – October 16 and 17, and 23 and 24.

Flagging off in conjunction with World Food Day on October 16, this year’s edition aims to bring a smile to beneficiaries as participating drivers deliver food bundles filled with local brands to them. And due to the overwhelming response last year, the event has been extended from three to four days to give more drivers the opportunity to participate.

FBSG is targeting to receive 100 tonnes of food donations (about three times the amount collected last year) and deliver 1,300 food bundles to 11 beneficiary centres that serve low-income households who cook. These centres are Bethel Community Services, Darussalam Mosque, Fei Yue FSC Bukit Batok, Lakeside FSC (Jurong East), REACH Community Services, Rotary FSC, Social Health Growth, The Salvation Army Balestier, The Salvation Army Kallang Bahru, Thye Hua Kwan FSC (Jurong), and United Indian Muslim Association.

About 450 cars from 18 car clubs have signed up to show their support in donating, collecting and delivering food bundles to FBSG’s warehouse at XPACE, 218 Pandan Loop. The participating car clubs are:

1. Audi R8 & Nissan GTR Owners Club
2. Bolt Group
3. Breakfast Drive by AGI
4. BMW 6 Series Club
5. BMW Car Club Singapore
6. BMW F22 Singapore
7. Grand Tourer Singapore
8. Horizon Drivers Club
9. Jazz Fit Club
10. Mini Mafia SG
11. Mustang Owners Club
12. SEAT CUPRA Owner’s Club
13. SG Convertible Club
14. Škoda Octavia Club Singapore
15. Supercars Of Singapore
16. Team CLA Singapore
17. The Serpents’ Pit (Alfa Romeo)
18. West Side Crew

Making it fun and enjoyable
While the pandemic has resulted in various restrictions, FBSG is sparing no efforts in making this event as fun and enjoyable as possible for all involved.

“The Food Bank Singapore is more than just about providing staples and food to fill tummies. We wanted to continue the trend that we have built over the years of creating innovative and interesting projects for donors, volunteers and partners. Not only do we want to raise awareness of hunger and why the fight needs to continue especially during these unusual times, but we also want to achieve our mission and purpose in a fun and enjoyable manner,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

Individual drivers can participate by sending their donations to FBSG’s warehouse on October 24, 2021 from 10am to 1pm.

Members of the public can drop their food donations at collection points in malls and Shell petrol kiosks across the island, where cars will collect from and deliver the food items to FBSG.

FBSG’s latest initiative also aims to create new revenue stream for  hawkers and other F&B outlets

September 17, 2021The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today launches the Feed the City 3.0 initiative to feed people in need in Singapore by letting them buy food from their preferred hawker and food and beverage (F&B) outlets and eat at their preferred time.

This reinvention is in response to FBSG’s findings on distribution of fixed types of food at fixed times. It is about giving choices as feeding the hungry should not be about having a one-size-fits-all approach.

“FBSG has been continuously keeping our ears on the ground to better understand  the needs of the hungry. We learnt that people prefer cooked food, want to choose  their own food, and want to eat at their own time. With the lack of feeding  programmes that meet such needs, we decided to change the way we feed  Singapore,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG. “The move will free volunteers from cooking and delivering door to door to focus on being ambassadors of the food  banking movement and getting more F&B partners and donors to come on board.”

The initiative is an extension of the organisation’s Bank Card programme, which lets  the needy purchase dry food items from its vending machines under its The Food  Pantry 2.0 programme. FBSG is expanding the programme to all its beneficiary organisations and reaching  out to community development councils (CDCs) to ensure that the ground is covered  and those in need are fed.

First on board as a F&B partner is Fei Siong Group, which operates food stalls in  coffee shops, food kiosks, quick serve restaurants and food atriums across 19  brands including Nam Kee Pau and Boleh Boleh.

“We are heartened to be able to support the beneficiaries via this initiative. With our  extensive range of food selection across both halal and non-halal brands from more  than 150 outlets island-wide, we hope that beneficiaries can redeem and enjoy a  meal of their choice in a location easily accessible to them,” said Tan Kim Siong,  Founder and Managing Director of Fei Siong Group. The group will progressively roll  out this initiative across its brands, starting with Encik Tan in September.

Feeding the hungry, helping food vendors

Under the scheme, a beneficiary orders a meal from a participating F&B outlet and  pays with the Bank Card. The vendor will scan the Bank Card using the app on the smartphone. The amount will be deducted from the card and the data will be sent to  FBSG to reimburse the vendor.

“The meals will be charged at regular and not subsidised price as we understand  that hawkers and F&B outlets are also going through a challenging time. Feed the  City 3.0 aims to provide them with an additional revenue stream, helping them to  save their livelihood. Some outlets are giving us a little discount to help defray the  operational cost. We hope at least 20 other F&B groups and food chains, as well as hawkers will sign up for the programme by the year end. We are also appealing for  more to donate cash and join us in feeding the hungry,” said Ng.

Feed the City was first organised in 2019 where 1,000 people in need from FBSG’s beneficiary members were treated to a meal at City Square Mall. When COVID-19  struck last year, the event was called Feed the City (Take-Away Edition), which  involved delivering about one million meals to needy families.

Every “Giveback Getaway” stay will help feed an underprivileged family for a month

23 February 2021 – The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore has launched a  meaningful “Giveback Getaway” stay initiative whereby the hotel will make a donation to The Food Bank Singapore with each “Giveback Getaway” room booking sold, enabling a registered underprivileged family to withdraw food rations, hot food and other essential items for a month  via the Food Pantry 2.0 initiative.

The Food Pantry 2.0 by The Food Bank Singapore is an automated platform that dispenses  emergency food aid 24/7 to those in need. Eligible beneficiaries will receive “Bank Cards”  preloaded with credits which will enable them to withdraw meals from any of the eleven Food  Pantry vending machines located in the heartlands around Singapore. Each of these vending  machines are stocked with food essentials like rice, oil, beverages, canned food, biscuits and  even hot food. Some also dispense basic hygiene items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste,  shampoo and laundry detergent.

The Ritz-Carlton has always had a cornerstone guiding principle of striving to make a difference  in the communities where we operate. Under the umbrella of our Community Footprints  Program, The Ritz-Carlton Hotels and Resorts partner with local organisations to benefit the  well-being of children, provide hunger and poverty relief, and advocate environmental  responsibility.

“The fallout from the global pandemic has undoubtedly increased food insecurity in our  community, and we wanted to inspire a charitable response among our guests to impact the lives  of the less fortunate. We have chosen to partner with The Food Bank Singapore to help uplift the 300,000 individuals that their good work supports, and hope to inspire our guests to join us in  this meaningful endeavour.” said Mr. Peter Mainguy, General Manager.

Ms. Nichol Ng, Co-founder of The Food Bank Singapore adds, “This is our first collaboration  with a hospitality group, where guests have the option of doing good while still enjoying a staycation – a luxury that not everyone can afford. Every donation received enables us to do that  much more for each beneficiary under our care, and we are grateful to The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia  Singapore for coming up with this wonderful idea.”

The “Giveback Getaway” room package is priced from SGD 490 per night and must be booked  by 11 May 2021, for stays valid until 29 December 2021. For room reservations, please visit  www.ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/singapore/offers/giveback, call 65.6434.5111 or email  rc.sinrz.reservations@ritzcarlton.com. An advanced reservation of five days is required. Flexible cancellation of up to 48 hours prior to arrival is allowed.

The package includes overnight accommodation with a complimentary upgrade to a Deluxe  Marina room, plus a delectable breakfast for two the next morning. For every package booked,  the hotel will make a donation to The Food Bank Singapore towards their Food Pantry 2.0 scheme, which will help feed one registered underprivileged family for a month. Singaporeans  may also redeem their SingaporeRediscovers vouchers towards this package on the designated  booking platforms.

Dairy Farm and The Food Bank Singapore launch Better Together - the first food donation drive focused on better nutrition for families in need

  • First 10,000 meals to be donated by Dairy Farm to kick start initiative
  •  Target to drive donations of 10,000 meals every month

18 December 2020 – The Dairy Farm Group, who owns retail supermarkets Giant and Cold Storage, today announced a partnership with The Food Bank Singapore to launch Better Together, a first-of-its-kind food donation drive focused on providing daily necessities and more nutritious products to families in need. The partnership kicks off with 10 pilot stores* across Cold Storage and Giant, with a view to roll out island-wide over the next few months. Dairy Farm will kick start the initiative with a donation of 10,000 meals to The Food Bank Singapore’s beneficiaries – a target the initiative hopes to achieve with the help of customers every month.

Better Together combines the scale and reach of Dairy Farm supermarkets, and The Food Bank Singapore’s extensive network and expertise with food donations which supports 370 organisations, serving over 100,000 families.

CLOSING THE NUTRITIONAL GAP IN FOOD DONATIONS

According to The Hunger Report 2019, a study commissioned by The Food Bank Singapore conducted by the Singapore Management University Lien Centre for Social Innovation, 10.4% of Singaporean households experienced food insecurity – defined as when a household does not have access to food for a healthy life – at least once in 12 months. This is despite Singapore being ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the most food-secure nation in the world on the Global Food Security Index in 2019.

Better Together aims to close the gap between current food donations and families in need. The initiative complements existing food donation efforts by focusing on nutrition, providing vulnerable families with the long-term dietary requirements key to support healthy living.

Chris Bush, Dairy Farm Chief Executive Officer for Southeast Asia Food Business said: “As a leading food retailer, food insecurity is naturally an issue close to our hearts and we know that this year will be particularly challenging for many families. Therefore, we are partnering with The Food Bank Singapore to join hands with our customers to ensure that vulnerable families in our communities have access to not only essential food products, but products with higher nutrition for a healthier lifestyle

“With stores located island-wide providing easy access to products and collection points, we are hoping to make it easier for customers to participate so we can make an even bigger impact for families in need.” Nichol Ng, Co-Founder of The Food Bank Singapore said “Food insecurity is associated with physical and mental health detriments such as stress and depression, and often, food-insecure households
prioritise affordability over nutritional value of food. We are proud to partner with Dairy Farm to increase the awareness of food insecurity in Singapore so that we might narrow the gap on food support to feed Singapore better together.”

INSPIRING ACTION

Customers will be encouraged to join the food donation drive with clear in-store communication on the initiative as well as the products needed by The Food Bank Singapore’s beneficiaries. Clearly marked collection points are available at participating Cold Storage and Giant outlets for customers to drop off their donations, making it simple for customers to participate.

Chris Bush added, “To help drive awareness of the initiative, we have enhanced the in-store experience to allow customers to learn more about food insecurity, making for a much more meaningful grocery shopping experience. We truly believe it’s the little things that make a giant difference, and hope that they will join us in bringing much-needed food essentials to families in need who do not have the luxury of choice when it comes to everyday groceries. Alone we can only do so little but together we can do so much more!”
