We are humbled and super ecstatic to share that we have just received a 1-for-1 grant from Singapore’s Tote Board!

In this grant, for every dollar that is donated, Tote Board will match the amount.

This means that the impact of every dollar donated to FBSG is now doubled!

How will your contribution help?

The funds we raise in this campaign will support our food aid programmes – Joy in Every Bundle, Food Bank Card and Tap-A-Meal.

With rising food prices and inflations driving core consumer prices, it has become more challenging and costly to provide food aid. What’s more, in these uncertain times, anyone and any family is susceptible to food insecurity.

Donate to the campaign on https://s.giving.sg/cpC5ja9 now and make your donations go twice as far! Fund our mission to build a brighter, food secure future!

These NFTs have been put up for auction on OpenSea and each NFT is tagged with a unique utility that ties back to a FBSG initiative for our donors. The proceeds raised from the auction of the NFTs will go towards FBSG’s Bank Card Programme to support 10,000 beneficiaries with food and daily essentials.

“NFT is a cool and interesting way to use art to spread our messages. From ourmetaverse experiment, we hope to share lessons learnt with fellow non-government organisations (NGOs) so that they too can consider this space fortheir fundraising efforts,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

What are the 3 NFTs meant for

The following are the three honorary NFTs that will be featured.

1. Masak Masak: What’s Cookin’?

This year’s event will be the first ever regional event involving car clubs from Singapore, Malaysia and beyond!

3. Tap a Meal, Tap to End Hunger!

This NFT art features Koorimo at one of FBSG’s Food Pantry 2.0 using a Bank Card to get access to food and essentials at the Food Pantry Vending Machines. The holder of this token will be granted the adoption of three (3) Food Pantry Vending Machines to be skinned and branded in his/her honour for up to one year. The holder may select the vending machine of choice from any of the 45 locations in Singapore and will get first hand involvement in the design of the skinning of the machine.

The Food Bank Singapore to go phygital with crypto and metaverse

To accept cryptocurrency donations, appoint phygital ambassador and launch NFTs

The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) will be going phygital (a combination of physical and digital) and entering the realm of the metaverse.

On April 21, it will mark its metaverse debut with the auction of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to raise funds to support 10,000 beneficiaries in Singapore with food and essential items for one year.

The honorary art NFTs will feature FBSG’s mascot KooriMo and include a unique utility to benefit and honour the successful bidder. The three sets are drawn by an artist from Smobler Studios, which will be appointed as FBSG’s metaverse partner.

Smobler Studios is a leading metaverse architect that owns Cobbleland in Sandbox, currently the biggest metaverse. Plans are underway to build KooriLand by FBSG along with assets that can be sold in the metaverse to raise funds to support the food bank’s mission of ending food insecurity in Singapore.

“We are piloting this move into the metaverse as a new way of fund raising. It’s an exciting new world that lets us experiment with different concepts and reach out beyond Singapore to a global audience. NFT is a cool and interesting way to use art to spread our messages. From our metaverse experiment, we hope to share lessons learnt with fellow non-government organisations so that they too can consider this space for their fundraising efforts. We also warmly welcome government agencies to work alongside us to make the metaverse a safe and secured mode of donation,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

Interested donors can take part in the honorary art NFT auction on OpenSea, which will be held from April 21 to April 24, 2022, 11.59pm.

Crypto donations and phygital ambassador

To align with the new economy and make it more convenient for a new generation of tech savvy donors, FBSG will be accepting cryptocurrency as donations. The innovative move will provide a new source of funds as well as set the pace for other charities to follow suit.

FBSG will also be appointing its first phygital ambassador on the 21st of April. His identity will be revealed at the auction event.

Celebrating a decade of feeding and fighting food insecurity

The move to phygital is part of FBSG’s 10th anniversary celebration, which began with a panel discussion on the findings of The Hunger Report Part II last month. A slew of activities in response to the findings will be held over the next eight months.

These include a S$12 million fund-raising campaign to provide 10,000 Bank Cards for 12 months to those in need. Recipients can use the cards at the targeted 1,000 food and beverage outlets that FBSG is onboarding under its Feed the City initiative. The cards can also be used at more than 60 vending machines dispensing food and daily essentials in Singapore.

FBSG is also creating a National Feeding Directory to make information on food aid more accessible and easily available. The directory hopes to unite all charities and programmes in Singapore on one platform.

“We are very happy at the ripple effect that we have managed to create within the ecosystem over the past decade. While we are still nowhere close to completing our mission of ending food insecurity in Singapore, we have come quite far in creating more awareness,” said Ng.

Changing the way we feed Singapore, we are empowering beneficiaries and restoring dignity through the power of autonomy.

The distribution of food to beneficiaries has traditionally been done through a “one size fits all approach” by predefining food bundles consisting of regular staple and non-perishable items. However, based on the findings from The Hunger Report Part II and conversations with our feeding partners, we have found that such an approach can lead to food wastage as food staples distributed to beneficiaries may not always be suitable for their dietary needs.

Developed to address the needs and to redefine the way beneficiaries receive food aid in Singapore, this initiative empowers beneficiaries with the ability to select and manage when and what they eat.

How it works

Under the Feed The City Tap A Meal initiative, FBSG partners with F&B establishments to provide meals to beneficiaries of our Feeding Partners using FBSG’s Bank Cards. Beneficiaries only need to tap the Bank Card Readers to make the redemption.

“We learnt that people prefer cooked food, want to choose their own food, and want to eat at their own time. With the lack of feeding programmes that meet such needs, we decided to change the way we feed Singapore.” Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

FBSG’s Bank Card Programme is a smart wallet pre-loaded with credits every month in which beneficiaries can redeem meals of their choice from participating F&B outlets and FBSG’s Food Pantry at any time.

Feed The City Tap A Meal is the 3rd run of the Feed The City initiative that first launched in 2019.

Locations

Beneficiaries can receive meals and essentials from the following locations:

Feeding the hungry is now just a tap away

Partner us to support 10,000 beneficiaries with monthly food and essentials

Feed The City Tap A Meal relies on fundraisers all year round to provide hot, nutritious meals and essentials to Singaporeans who need it.

$100 per month provides aid for meals and essentials to a beneficiary

Your contribution will help prevent hunger for someone today and end food insecurity in all forms in Singapore.

Sign up as a F&B Partner to the Feed The City Tap A Meal Initiative

The Feed The City Tap A Meal initiative not only provides support to beneficiaries. It provides new revenue streams and support for F&Bs and hawkers that participate as F&B Partners.

Join us in our mission to build a brighter, food secure future for all Singaporeans by eliminating food insecurity in all forms.

The Hunger Report Part 1 was first launched in 2018 revealing findings that one in 10 Singaporeans face some form of food insecurity. This 25th March 2022, in partnership with Lien Center for Social Innovation and Tolaram, we are launching part 2 of the Hunger Report – Targeting specific needs in the wake of COVID-19.

“When we started working on the Hunger Report Part I in 2018, the world was a very different place from what it is now. From the first Hunger Report published in 2020, we saw 10.4% of the population face some form of food insecurity which was worrying. Ten per cent of Singaporean households experienced food insecurity at least once in the last 12 months

SMU’s Lien Centre for Social Innovation takes an in-depth look at food insecurity in Singapore through “The Hunger Report 2019”.

16 September 2020 (Wednesday) – Food insecurity is defined as a state when a household does not have, or is not confident of having, economic and physical access to sufficient, acceptable food for a healthy life. The Singapore Management University (SMU)’s Lien Centre for Social Innovation (LCSI) recently completed the first nationally representative study on food insecurity in Singapore.

Commissioned by The Food Bank Singapore, the study follows a 2018 report, “Hunger in a Food Lover’s Paradise: Understanding Food Insecurity in Singapore”—a smaller-scale investigation that focused on 236 low socio-economic status (SES) households. The Hunger Report 2019 is a nationally representative study involving customised random samples bought from the Department of Statistics. A total of 1,206 usable surveys were collected from Singaporean households between July and December 2019, and the report looked into the prevalence, causes and consequences of food insecurity in Singapore.

Despite Singapore being ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the most food-secure nation in the world on the Global Food Security Index in 2019, this study reveals a paradox. Singapore has done well in terms of achieving sufficiency of food supply through a strategic diversification of food sources; however, this progress has not prevented certain sections of the country’s population from reporting food insecurity. 10.4% of Singaporean households (citizens and/or permanent residents) surveyed experienced food insecurity at least once in the last 12 months, out of which two out of five of these households experienced food insecurity at least once a month.

According to Nichol Ng, co-founder of the Food Bank Singapore, “Food insecurity is a concern even in an affluent society such as Singapore. The COVID-19 pandemic has escalated this problem exponentially with people suffering from pay cuts and job losses. The Food Bank Singapore sees food as the defining denominator when gauging how severe someone’s situation is. We must do all that we can to ensure that food insecurity becomes history and that no one goes hungry in our country.”

Key findings of survey
1) Food-insecure households were more likely to reside in 1- and 2-room HDB homes compared to food-secure households.

2) Food-insecure families tended to have heads of households with lower educational qualifications (much less likely to have a university-level education) than food-secure families.

3) Only 22% of food-insecure households were currently receiving food support. A substantial percentage of food-insecure participants did not seek food support, citing embarrassment, being unaware of available food support and the belief that others need it more than themselves.

4) Food insecurity was associated with both physical and mental health detriments. Food-insecure participants were more likely to be in the high-risk BMI category compared to food-secure participants. Food-insecure individuals reported a slew of negative emotions demonstrating the psychological impact of food insecurity.

5) Food-secure households had significantly fewer affiliations with food-insecure households compared to those who were food-insecure.

Report recommendations

1) Tackle misalignment of food support
Geographical mapping of areas where vulnerable households reside can aid in identifying food-insecure neighbourhoods and informing food aid organisations. At the national level, more strategic coordination of food support should involve multi-sector partnerships that encompass the relevant and diverse stakeholders in the food support ecosystem. These include the government, and non-profit and private sectors.

2) Increase the level of awareness about food insecurity in Singapore
The lack of awareness about food insecurity in Singapore, especially among food-secure households, warrants attention and action. Information and education on food insecurity is required in order to cultivate empathy and awareness that this is a pertinent issue in Singapore.

3) Prioritise nutritious and healthy eating among Singapore households
Rigorous national campaigns to encourage healthy eating should continue and be further amplified. As cost was listed as a major deterrent to choosing healthier food options, this aspect should be further explored. If healthier food options do not necessarily mean higher costs, this message should be incorporated into healthy eating campaigns.

The researchers of this study note that some of the report’s recommendations are being addressed through the ongoing efforts of the Charity Food Workgroup, which was convened by the Ministry of Social and Family Development in 2019. The multi-sector Workgroup – comprising food aid organisations, volunteers, corporates, and government agencies – seeks to improve coordination and efficiency within the charity food sector. This allows households in need to receive food support that suits their requirements, thereby also reducing wastage.
