360 cars collect, donate and deliver food items for Drive Hunger Away

October 23, 2020 – The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) has collected about 35 tonnes of food donations from its largest food drive, the Drive Hunger Away event that commemorated World Food Day 2020.

From October 16 to 18, about 360 cars from 18 car clubs collected, donated and delivered food items that will go to 360 beneficiary organisations that feed more than 300,000 individuals across Singapore. Members of the public also donated by dropping food items in Bank Boxes around the island, which were picked up by volunteers and sent to FBSG’s warehouse.

“In true Food Bank Fashion, the event was creative, fun and impactful. We are deeply grateful and heartened by the outpouring of support by the car clubs and donors. Whoever said that advocacy must always be stoic and dry? Look out for Drive Hunger Away 2021 where more excitement and adrenaline awaits. Together, we can apply the brakes on food insecurity in Singapore,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

Food Bank Singapore collects 8 truckloads of excess food at food show

Food Bank Singapore collects 8 truckloads of excess food at food show

At the mammoth Food & Hotel Asia (FHA) exhibition on the 8th to 11th April 2014, Food Bank Singapore collected eight truckloads of excess food worth nearly $100,000. This is the first time that the food bank has salvaged excess food at a food exhibition and it is looking forward to doing so at other such shows.

Even though there were a lot of meats and seafood on display, the food bank understood the sensitivity of handling these products as there were challenges to handle, transport and distribute them in good time. Because of this, the food bank collected mainly non-perishable items such as packaged goods like biscuits, crackers, tidbits, juices, frozen confectionery like donuts, muffins, cakes, breads and even some cheeses that are seldom seen in the market!

There was a huge variety of brands and products collected and volunteers would sort the collected foods to check expiry dates and the condition of the products.

The excess foods were collected and distributed daily to those who could collect them. Some beneficiaries had arranged for their volunteers to help out and come down on Friday to pick out and collect the items that they wanted. The balance that could not be given out was taken back to the Food Bank Singapore’s warehouse to be shared with the other beneficiaries.

“Not only did we reduce food wastage but these premium foods have benefitted many of our member beneficiaries. FHA has given us exposure to 10 halls of potential donors and raised awareness of our organisation. We are grateful and happy to be able to work with Singapore Exhibition Services on FHA 2014,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of Food Bank Singapore”.

The Food & Hotel Asia 2014 has been a great opportunity for the food bank to share what we do and spread the news on reducing food wastage and channelling them to better use.

The Food Bank Singapore would like to thank the many volunteers and beneficiaries that chipped in to help us with our inaugural exhibition! Thank you!

The Food Bank Singapore achieves IPC status

The Food Bank Singapore achieves IPC status

The Food Bank Singapore has received approval as an Institution of a Public Character (IPC) by the Singapore Government’s Charities Unit.

IPCs are charities whose activities are beneficial to the community in Singapore as a whole, and not confined to sectional interests or group of persons based on race, creed, belief or religion. They must be administered by governing board members, at least half of whom are independent and citizens of Singapore.

With the IPC status, The Food Bank Singapore is able to issue tax deductible receipts for qualifying donations to donors. Donors can claim tax relief from their assessable income based on the amount donated at prevailing deduction rate.

“We are happy to be able to reciprocate the generosity of the donors by allowing them to enjoy the 300 percent tax rebate. This status means a lot to us to be able to do something for those who support us. Ultimately, we hope that this status will help us to bring in more donations to support our mission to feed the hungry,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of The Food Bank Singapore.
