New ED brings wealth of experience – from international banking to sheep farming

Singapore – May 3, 2024 – The Food Bank Singapore (FBSG) today announces the appointment of Dr Arthur Chin as its Executive Director.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, Chin will oversee the successful execution of FBSG’s programmes, provide financial oversight, ensure internal and regulatory compliance, and lead the team towards fulfilling the organisation’s mission of eradicating food insecurity in Singapore.

Chin brings a wealth of experience, with a career spanning international banking to the higher education sector. He was previously Deputy Chief Executive of a New Zealand government ministry that was instrumental in promoting social cohesion, diversity and inclusion, and played a pivotal role in ensuring that insights from ethnic communities contribute towards policy development.

“After years of searching, we are delighted to have found in Arthur someone with a zest for life, passion to transform and genuine empathy for society. We are confident that he will add his own flair and knowledge in our journey ahead. With our values aligned, the Board of Directors, along with Arthur, is determined to combat food insecurity in Singapore during these uncertain times,” said Nichol Ng, Co-founder of FBSG.

During the pandemic, Chin organised live-streaming farm tours to showcase life as a Singaporean sheep farmer in New Zealand. His goal was to raise awareness about the impact of climate change. Surprisingly, these tours became incredibly popular as he hosted more than 800 tours, reaching more than 25,000 people globally through Airbnb Online Experiences. The startup was recognised as one of New Zealand’s top tourism operators, winning Airbnb’s Host Awards in 2022.

“I have been looking for new challenges since I decided to return to Singapore after spending 28 years in New Zealand. Living on a farm with livestock including sheep, I experienced first-hand the impact of climate and COVID-19 on food insecurity. Joining FBSG can be described as an alignment of stars, allowing me to maintain a focus on supporting the less privileged and working with the food industry, while I re-acquaint with Singapore,” said Arthur Chin, Executive Director of FBSG.
